If you have visited America or Canada you will have experienced the need to provide tips for services received. This includes anything from eating out, getting a hair cut, buying clothes or going on a tour. This is quite different to the experience in Australia where tips are not enforced.
Why do Americans/Canadians receive tips? Well the main reason is the fact the hourly pay per hour is quite low especially when compared to Australia, where casually employed Australian service workers may earn 3x per hour MORE than their American/Canadian counterparts!
So what does this mean for Americans/Canadians? Well for one, staff work hard for their tips, meaning that you often receive great service. After all if you don’t, you don’t tip as much.
This is very different when you pay the same regardless of the level of service you receive in Australia. Because if you don’t receive commission or tips where’s the incentive to do better?
Although, at Vent2Me we don’t think paying your staff an extremely low wage is the answer, we do feel there is something to be learnt about the need to offer incentives to encourage better customer service.
This is why Vent2Me exists. After all a business doesn’t provide adequate service, we will vent about it!
Until next time,
