Italy, you either love it, or you hate it! Regardless of your impressions of Italy, it definitely is a beautiful country with amazing scenery, so tourism will always be a strong industry for Italy. However, it’s no surprise that Italy is suffering economy wise, as it’s definitely NOT a country that prides itself on efficiency.
The one thing that sticks in my mind regarding Italy, is their passion for family, which has come at a cost to their economy. If shops and businesses close in the afternoon, only to reopen when they feel like it – of course there will be economic issues, and to think they were surprised by the fact their economy is appalling!
The other issue I found with Italy is that if you are not Italian, or friends with Italians, you are treated differently – even to the extent that tourists get different menus at restaurants. This surprised me as Australia is in my opinion, much more multicultural.
So what did I learn from my time in Italy? Family is important but so is working and saving for the future. There is nothing to be proud of by being in debt and if they want to recover don’t sell specials that are in fact not special at all, because, negative word of mouth regardless of what language it is, is hard to recover from.
Until next time,
