When you are in business for yourself, or a small business with other people, often the brand and vision you begin with changes over time. And this is not a bad thing. You determine where your brand feels strongest, what you love doing the most, and where your target audience lays. You also discover that being in business and doing everything can be very tiring and disheartening. You need to be true to yourself, which will give you a much more powerful and honest branding experience.
I have been in business now, for myself, as a digital marketer, for three years. I am not the same person I was three years ago. I love digital marketing, don’t get me wrong, but I have discovered I love teaching, mentoring and sharing what I know with others.
My journey from sole trader to running a digital marketing agency, with in an office in Canterbury, was sparked by the behaviour and culture of my last job. I was bullied out of my last job, read about it here. While bullying is never a good thing, it was this action which spurred me to go out on my own and prove my old boss wrong. All my energy was going into being the best digital marketer I could!
Three years on, I am wanting to pass my knowledge onto business owners who want to excel and grow their business.
So this change in me is actually a change in brand for me. I am no longer ‘just’ a web designer and digital marketing strategist. I am now also mentoring and coaching others to lift themselves out of their self-doubt and into the realm of awesome.
In short, I am being truer to myself. I have this joy when helping others, when what I do has results, be it results for a client, or that lightbulb moment in my student’s eyes. And so, I am evolving my brand to match where I see myself now, and in the years to come.
Evolving my brand has included a bold new website, changing the message I give through social media, offering useful marketing resources and the message I have on my website for potential clients. Will I still do all that other stuff? Sure. I am not going to stop everything I do. Clients who have loved me in the past, I will always be there to help them with new and exciting projects.
Am I afraid of losing work because I am changing my brand? Not at all. I am moving closer to the truer version of who I am. I will show more passion, and hence more energy to what I do, and as such give clients greater value. I will attract the kind of client who wants my design skills, my marketing skills, but who also may want some mentoring from me, who may want me to show their team certain aspects of the digital market.
And so, I am evolving. My core business is still the same, I am now just more focused on helping others. And it feels good.
